Writing contest winners

Westover Christian Academy had two students win awards from the “Young Writers’ Contest” sponsored by The Virginia State Literacy Association. Holly Hutcherson, 10th grade, won for her short fiction entitled, “Lettera da Una Sognatrice: Letter from a Dreamer”.  Mia Waddell, 8th grade, won in the poetry division with her work “Experience.” Student submissions from the Piedmont Area Chapter, which includes Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Brunswick, Campbell, Charlotte, Danville City, Greensville City, Halifax, Lunenburg, Lynchburg City, Martinsville City, Mecklenburg, Nelson, Nottaway, Pittsylvania, and Prince Edward counties, totaled hundreds.  This year’s theme was “Honoring the Past…embracing the future!”  Students chose from various writing styles: short fiction, poetry, or essay.  Each submission had to be original writing composed by students as part of a classroom writing project, without help from the teacher.  Regional-level judging announcements were made today and two local students won in their respective categories! All student winners from the contest will be honored at an awards banquet held the last weekend in April.
