tennis racket and ball

March 16, 2020.

This year will mark the first time in Westover history that the school will have a Mens High School tennis team. Our team is made up of junior-Joe Perez, junior-Matthew Cottrill, sophomore-Chris Massingale, sophomore-Sammy Alderson, and sophomore-Lee Nelson. These five young men along with Mr. Eddie Blackburn, who is the head coach of the Men's high school team have spent the last month preparing for the season. Last Thursday marked the beginning to the WCA tennis season. The season opener was held at Basset High School located in Basset, Virginia. Though we did not win a match on Thursday, that did not upset us. Instead, it made us stronger for the matches to come. These five young men along with Coach Blackburn are working hard to improve skills and technique in all aspects of the game. It is not about the points or winning and loosing. The true beauty in the sport is getting on the court and trying your best while having a great time doing it. All five of these young men did so last Thursday. Matches that were scheduled on our home courts at George Washington High school along with away matches have been postponed for the next two weeks due to the recent coronavirus outbreak. We all cannot wait to get back out on the courts and play our hearts out. We as a team would also like to thank Rusty Lovell, Director of Programming, at Southside Tennis Association for volunteering to drive the bus to our match last Thursday.
